"Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God." — Psalm 42:5 (NKJV)
Depression is often referred to as the "silent storm." It sweeps through the lives of millions, pressing hearts and minds under its weight. Even faithful servants of God are not immune. One of the most vivid examples from Scripture is Elijah, the prophet who found himself in a deep valley of despair immediately after a mountain-top victory. His story offers us incredible insight into God's resources for those who are dealing with depression.
Imagine devoting your entire life to a single goal. For Olympic athletes like Michael Phelps, success is measured in split seconds. Phelps, the most decorated Olympian, revealed in an interview that after reaching the pinnacle of success, he found himself in a pit of depression. He described it as being “so lost” that he thought, Why don’t I just end it all? Despite his achievements, he felt empty and without purpose.
This story mirrors Elijah’s experience in 1 Kings 19. After his miraculous triumph on Mount Carmel, where God sent fire from heaven, Elijah was overwhelmed by fear and despair when Jezebel threatened his life. He fled into the wilderness, sat under a broom tree, and prayed to die. Depression can strike even after our greatest victories, leaving us asking, What now?
Lessons from Elijah’s Story
Elijah’s journey in 1 Kings 19 teaches us how God provides resources to help us through depression:
The psalmist in Psalm 42:5 wrestled with the same emotions we often feel in the midst of depression. He asked his soul, “Why are you cast down? Why are you disquieted within me?” His internal struggle is one we can all relate to—when the weight of life feels unbearable, and answers seem elusive. Yet, he doesn’t stop there. He directs his soul to a better truth: “Hope in God.” This verse reminds us that even when our emotions pull us down, we have an anchor in God. He is our hope, our help, and the source of our strength.
Reflection Question: When you feel overwhelmed or downcast, how can you practically remind yourself to put your hope in God?
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for being my refuge and strength in times of trouble. When my soul feels cast down, help me to remember Your faithfulness and put my hope in You. Teach me to rest in Your presence, to bring my burdens to You, and to find encouragement in Your Word. Lord, give me the strength to embrace the purpose You’ve placed before me and the courage to seek help when I need it. Surround me with community and remind me that I am never alone. Thank You for loving me through every valley. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Lessons from Elijah’s Story
Elijah’s journey in 1 Kings 19 teaches us how God provides resources to help us through depression:
- Physical Care (Rest and Nutrition):
Elijah was exhausted and hungry. God’s first provision was not a sermon but rest and food. The angel said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you” (1 Kings 19:7). Sometimes, the first step toward healing is simply taking care of our physical needs. - Honest Expression (Pouring Out to God):
Elijah shared his frustrations with God, saying, “I alone am left, and they seek to take my life” (1 Kings 19:10). God invites us to bring our raw emotions to Him. He can handle our fears, frustrations, and doubts. - God’s Presence (The Still Small Voice):
Elijah experienced God’s presence in a quiet, intimate way. God wasn’t in the wind, earthquake, or fire—but in a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12). In our darkest moments, we often want dramatic solutions, but God’s healing often comes through gentle, quiet reassurance. - Renewed Purpose (A New Assignment):
God gave Elijah a new mission: anoint kings and mentor Elisha (1 Kings 19:15-16). Depression can make us feel purposeless, but God reminds us that our work in His kingdom is not finished. - Community (Elisha and the 7,000):
Elijah felt alone, but God revealed He had preserved 7,000 faithful followers and gave Elijah a companion in Elisha. Depression isolates us, but God calls us to lean into community for support and encouragement.
