"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ" - Ephesians 1:3 (NKJV)
I was thinking about this little boy who went to the store with his parents. The little boy was so good that the shop owner, who had this little candy jar, said, "Son, I want you to put in your hand and get you a handful of candy. You've done so good on this trip. I want you to get a handful of candy and take it with you."
The boy was quiet and kind of reserved, facing his parents. The shop owner said again, "Come on, son. Put your hand in there and grab a whole handful of candy, and you can take that with you. You've been so good today."
Finally, the shop owner just took his hand, put it in there, grabbed this big old handful, and put it in the arms of this little boy. And it was just overflowing. They walked out, and the mom said to the son, "That's not like you, son. You were shy and reserved. I mean, you've got to be a little bit more gracious when people talk to you."
He looked back at his mama and said, "I wasn't shy. I just knew if I took it, my little hand would only get so much. His hand is much bigger than mine. And I knew he would dig in there and give me out of his hand."
That's exactly how we should think about our salvation and our inheritance that God has given us. He hasn't given us His blessings according to our ability to receive. He's giving to us according to His ability and out of His resources. Ephesians 1:19 says, "and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power." He gives out of His mighty power, not based on how much we can receive. Have confidence in His blessedness and rejoice in a God Whose hands are much bigger than ours!
Reflection Question: What areas of your spiritual life are you trying to "grab" with your own small hands instead of letting God's bigger hands fill your life with overflowing blessings?
Heavenly Father, I confess that sometimes I try to grab Your blessings according to what my little hands can hold instead of trusting Your bigger hands to give me more than I could ever take myself. Help me to receive according to Your ability to give, not my limited ability. Fill my life with the overflowing spiritual blessings that come from Who You are, not from who I am. In Jesus' Name, amen.
