"Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." - Ephesians 1:2 (NKJV)
Remember the story of Mephibosheth? He was the grandson of King Saul and son of Jonathan, David's best friend (2 Samuel 4:4). Due to an accident in childhood, he was crippled and living in a wasteland called Lo Debar - literally meaning "no pasture" (2 Samuel 9:4). When King David sought to show kindness to Jonathan's family, he found Mephibosheth and brought him to the palace (2 Samuel 9:1-5).
When Mephibosheth came before David, he called himself "a dead dog" (2 Samuel 9:8). But David said, "You will eat at my table like one of my sons. I'm giving you all your father's land" (2 Samuel 9:7, 11). Suddenly, this man who saw himself as worthless was adopted into the king's family with full privileges.
Mephibosheth had a choice: continue seeing himself as a rejected, crippled man living in a wasteland, or embrace his new identity as a member of the royal family (2 Samuel 9:13). You face the same choice. You have a story of how God rescued you from your own wasteland. But do you still see yourself the old way?
Paul's greeting in Ephesians reminds us of the same royal treatment: "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." Grace always comes before peace. Grace is God's riches poured out on undeserving sinners - what He provided at Calvary. Because of that grace, we've been transformed from sinners to saints, and now we can experience true peace. Romans 5:1 says, "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Just as David extended grace to Mephibosheth, bringing him from Lo Debar to the palace, God has extended His grace to you. You're no longer living in the wasteland of sin and shame - you've been brought into the King's family with full privileges.
The question is: Will you live like royalty, or will you keep seeing yourself as a "dead dog"? God calls you His child. It's time to take your seat at the King's table.
Reflection question: In what practical ways can you live today like the adopted child of the King that you are?
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your amazing grace that brought me from the wasteland into Your royal family. Help me to live today with the confidence and peace that comes from knowing I belong to You. When the world tries to pressure me to conform, remind me that I am Your child. In Jesus' Name, amen.
