"Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints who are in Ephesus and faithful in Christ Jesus." - Ephesians 1:1 (NKJV)
There was a couple traveling from Minneapolis to Florida for their 20th anniversary. Due to scheduling conflicts, the husband flew ahead to set things up. Using the hotel's email system, he tried to send his wife a message saying he'd arrived safely. But he mistyped one letter in her email address.
Meanwhile, in Houston, a grieving widow had just returned from her minister husband's funeral. She rarely checked email, but something prompted her to look that day. She screamed and fainted when she read:
To: My loving wife
Subject: I've arrived
I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now, and you're allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I've just arrived and have been checked in. Everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then.
P.S. It sure is hot down here!!!
While humorous, this mix-up reminds us that knowing our true location matters a lot. "Location, location, location" is a phrase that means everything in real estate. The same house with identical features can have vastly different values depending on where it sits.
Paul wrote to believers in Ephesus, but this letter was meant to circulate among all the churches in Asia Minor. Why? Because every believer needs to understand not just their physical address, but their spiritual location as well.
You may live in Richmond, Atlanta, or anywhere else on earth. That's your physical residence. But as a believer, your true identity isn't defined by your zip code - it's defined by your position in Christ. When you understand where you really live spiritually, it changes everything about how you see yourself and how you live your life.
The question "Where do you live?" has a much deeper answer than most people realize. Your physical address is just one piece of the puzzle. Your spiritual location - being positioned in Christ - is what truly defines who you are and determines how you should live.
Reflection Question: How does knowing you're more than just a resident of your city change the way you view your purpose and identity?
Heavenly Father, thank You that my true identity isn't found in my physical address but in my relationship with You. Help me to remember that while I live in this world, I am not of this world. Show me how to live as a citizen of heaven even while residing on earth. Give me Your perspective on my true location and purpose. In Jesus' Name, amen.
