"Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you." - 1 Peter 4:12 (NKJV)
Remember those pop quizzes in school? You'd walk into class. The teacher would say, "Take out your pen. Take out a piece of paper. We are taking a pop quiz." And you'd say, "No, that's not fair!" But if you looked at your syllabus, it was right there. Pop quizzes can happen at any time. Why? Because teachers use them to assess your progress.
Life is like that. Life is a schoolroom. As Charles Swindoll said, "Life is a schoolroom and the assessments are the trials."
It's easy to say, "Jesus is my Lord and Savior" when times are good. When times are comfortable. But the real test comes when persecution arises, when trouble knocks, when trials come, and you're questioning, "Does God know what's happening in my life?"
Notice, Peter says, "Beloved." He calls them beloved. You are loved by God. "Don't think it's strange concerning the fiery trials which are to test you."
Trials reveal our true colors. Think about tea bags—various types and flavors. They all look identical on the outside. When you place them in boiling water, their true colors emerge. Sometimes the water turns red, sometimes green, sometimes brown. The heat reveals their true colors. Our true selves are revealed not in the good times, but in difficult times. Peter is saying, don't think it's strange concerning the fiery trial.
God has a purpose. God has a reason. Don't be surprised when difficulties come into your life. God is not surprised by what you're facing today. He's using it as an assessment tool to develop perseverance, maturity, and character in your life. You're in God's classroom, and He's the perfect Teacher who always gives tests you CAN handle with His help.
Reflection Question: What "pop quiz" trial are you facing right now? How might God be using it to test your spiritual progress?
Heavenly Father, help me see trials not as strange things but as Your assessments in the classroom of life. Give me grace to respond with faith, not fear. Help me trust Your timing and Your plan, even when I don't understand the lesson You're teaching. In Jesus' Name, amen.
