"...and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered." - 1 Peter 3:7 (NKJV)
We are "heirs together of the grace of life". In God's sight, the ground is level. Christian couples are co-equals before God. Here we may be husband and wife, but in all eternity, we'll be brothers and sisters in Christ. That is the primary relationship.
But notice the warning: "that your prayers may not be hindered." God is telling the husband, "Beware how you treat her because I'm watching." The word "hinder" is a military term. It's like putting something in the way so the other side can no longer advance. God is saying your prayers will be hindered if you don't treat her right. Do you want God to pay attention to your prayers? Make sure you treat your wife the way God wants you to treat her. He is watching how you handle your home.
We both come to marriage flawed in our humanity. We have our difficulties, but together in the sight of God as brothers and sisters in Christ, we can connect our lives and be one. This oneness will be beautiful for a watching world.
Reflection: Do you treat your wife as a spiritual equal? How might your treatment of her be affecting your prayer life?
Father, help me remember that my wife and I are co-heirs of Your grace. Let my treatment of her never hinder my prayers, but bring glory to You. In Jesus' Name, amen.
