Scripture: "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you." — John 15:7 (NKJV)
The promises of God are powerful, but they are not without conditions. Take John 15:7, for example. It’s a wonderful promise: “You will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” But we often miss the first part: “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you.”
God’s promises are not about granting us everything we want. They are about aligning our desires with His will. When we abide in Him and let His Word dwell in us, our prayers change. We stop asking for what we want and start asking for what He wants.
Here’s an example: Philippians 4:7 talks about the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. What an incredible promise! But it’s tied to a condition in verse 6: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” The peace comes when we pray with thanksgiving and trust God with our needs.
Friend, don’t pull God’s promises out of their context. Don’t treat them like blank checks. Instead, look at the conditions attached to them and trust that God’s Word is faithful when we are obedient.
Reflection Question: Are you abiding in Christ and allowing His Word to shape your desires?
Lord, help me to abide in You and allow Your Word to shape my prayers and desires. Teach me to trust You fully and to live in obedience so that I can walk in the fullness of Your promises. In Jesus’ name, amen.
