"But rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy." - 1 Peter 4:13 (NKJV)
Jesus said this in John 15:20: "Remember the word that I said to you. A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they'll also persecute you." Second Timothy 3:12 says, "All who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution." It's a promise from God. They put Jesus on a cross—what are they going to do to His followers?
You might say, "I don't know what everybody's worried about. I never experience persecution." Maybe it's because you're heading in the same direction as this world. When your Christian beliefs go against the culture, you're going to feel the persecution - it's a promise from God.
Peter says something incredible here: When you suffer as a Christian, you share in Christ's sufferings. You're not suffering the same way Jesus did on the cross—He paid for our sins—but you are identifying with Jesus and the persecution He endured.
The word "partake" means to share in something, to participate together. When you stand for the truth and face opposition, or refuse to compromise and experience rejection, or choose God's way over the world's way, you're sharing in the fellowship with Jesus.
This isn't something to fear; it's something to rejoice in! Peter encourages us to be glad because when you participate in Christ's sufferings, His glory will be revealed, and you will share in that joy too.
Reflection Question: How have you experienced opposition because of your faith? How does knowing you're "partaking in Christ's sufferings" change your perspective?
Dear Jesus, thank You for the privilege of sharing in Your sufferings. When I stand for truth in this world, help me see opposition not as something to avoid but as fellowship with You. Give me courage to never be ashamed, even when it costs me something. Help me rejoice in these moments. In Your Name I pray, amen.
