"For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:11 NKJV)
The angels announced "good tidings of great joy" because the solution to humanity's greatest problem had arrived. True joy is different from happiness. Happiness depends on what happens - the happenstances of life. Happiness depends on circumstances, but joy depends on Jesus.
Paul said "rejoice in the Lord always" (Philippians 4:4) from jail while chained to a prison guard. He was joyful about that too, saying "I've got a captive audience. I can tell them about Jesus" (see Philippians 1:12-14). His perspective was one of joy based on Jesus, not in his circumstances.
Romans 14:17 says, "the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit." You can only be joyful if you have centered yourself in the Person and work of Jesus Christ.
Some of us will have happiness this Christmas, some will not. Happiness may be being surrounded by loved ones. Some people might not have that same special loved one with them this year like they did last year. But joy can be present in both good times and bad because joy is rooted in what Christ has done for you.
Reflection Question: How can focusing on what you have in Jesus keep you joyful this Christmas?
Dear Heavenly Father, fill my heart with the joy that comes from knowing Jesus. When circumstances try to steal my happiness, remind me of the unchanging reasons I have to rejoice. Help me share this joy with others who need to hear the good news. In Jesus' Name, amen.
