December 10 - Joseph's Obedience

"Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife" (Matthew 1:24 NKJV)

Joseph understood that Mary was pregnant, and he was confused. This was a surprise calling for the confused Joseph. He was so just and righteous and he knew he wasn't the father, but he loved Mary and didn't want to mistreat her. So he decided to put her away quietly.

But the angel tells him in Matthew 1:20-21, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit." Joseph was being called upon in his confusion to trust God.

Maybe God would respond by saying, "Joseph, maybe it's not about you." God's plan to save humanity would be to have Jesus born without the aid of a human father, and God needed to trust some man to raise this child. Perhaps in your confusion, you need to remember - maybe it's not about me. Maybe I'm to do my part and be faithful because God is fulfilling His purposes.

Joseph's response was immediate obedience. He didn't demand more proof or try to negotiate with God. He simply did what the angel commanded him.

Reflection Question: How can you follow Joseph's example of immediate obedience to God's direction, even when you don't understand?

Dear Heavenly Father, I want to immediately obey Your commands, like the example given by Joseph. When You speak to me through Your Word or by Your Spirit, help me respond with faith rather than doubt. Give me the courage to obey even when Your instructions seem difficult or confusing. In Jesus' Name, amen.
